Cardiac rehabilitation education forum
We hold a 2.5-hour education forum session about 4 to 6 weeks after your discharge from hospital. The aim of the forum is to give you information, support and confidence to help you make healthy lifestyle choices. This can help you reduce your risk of another heart event and improve your quality of life. You will also meet other people who have been through the same event as you which can be helpful.
The forums are held online using Zoom. We encourage you to bring a friend or whānau member who will be supporting you with your recovery and healthy living. They might benefit from the information as well.
Topics covered in the forum
- Understanding coronary artery disease
- Understanding your heart medications
- Education about heart healthy eating
- Information about Stress — how it affects your heart and some ideas to help you manage stress
- Education about the benefits of exercise for heart health
The forum is facilitated by the Cardiac rehabilitation nurse specialists who have advanced nursing knowledge and experience in the topics discussed. The forums are informal and you are welcome to ask questions.
If you have any questions or concerns about your recovery, there will be time at the end of the session if you wish to talk to the Cardiac rehabilitation nurse specialists.
You are invited to the forum automatically
You will be sent an invitation automatically by our booking system if you are eligible to attend — not everyone who has had a heart event will be invited. The forums are mainly aimed at people with coronary artery disease who have had:
- a heart attack
- a heart stent procedure
- heart bypass surgery
- a tear in the heart artery — spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD)
- broken heart syndrome (Takotsubo).
Come along if you are invited
There is no age limit to attend the forum and we encourage you to attend. We also encourage you to bring a support person.
Some friends and whānau may 'not be into this kind of thing' and it can be difficult to change your lifestyle habits if you do not feel supported. You may find it helpful to explain to them that you are going to the forum to learn how to lower your risk of another heart event, and how to stay healthy for yourself as well as for your whānau.
Your whānau are welcome to call the Cardiac rehabilitation nurse specialists if they have any questions about the forum.
Cardiac rehabilitation referrals
The invitation to attend a class will be automatically generated by the booking and scheduling computer system. If you are eligible to attend, you will receive a letter by email or post with a date for you to attend.
If you are unable to attend the education forum on the date you are invited, the forums are held monthly, and you can attend on any of the other dates using the same link.
